The wedge
WSST (‘West Side Story’) is an open-centred housing block adjacent to the city centre of Breda. It provides housing suitable for families with children. With two storeys plus a ridge roof volume, the low-rise part of the block has an architecture which echoes the small scale and the alignment of the adjacent streets. A taller section with apartments lies alongside the main road. Private gardens are situated on the outside of the tapering block, while the inside contains a spacious courtyard measuring 30m by 75m. The courtyard is designed as a collective garden for the residents. A roof overhang with columns marks the transition between the private and collective domains. This transitional area is one step higher than the courtyard, which has partly-submerged parking facilities built beneath it.
